Mick Hanbury

Dave Beat, the club chairman welcomed Mick and any visitors to the meeting. Mick started his career as a cabinet maker and took up woodturning around 28 years ago. He is now recognised internationally as one of the finest artistic turners.

Mick kicked off the day by turning a 12” sycamore blank. He turned the base using a ½ “ bowl gouge with a single bevel. He turned the base with an ogee curve. The transition from convex to concave curve was at approx. 50% from the edge of the foot to the edge of the rim. The base was finished with a foot approx. 1/3 the width of the bowl and a concave curve. The inside was turned and decorated. He showed some of the techniques used to generate some of the creations below. It was a fantastic day and enjoyed by all. Certainly an inspiration when it comes to painting items. He also showed turning and painting a goblet and a small bowl.
